The Mediterranean Games are, along with the Olympic Games, one of the most important sporting events in which Spain can take part. They are attended by elite sportsmen and women from 21 countries, competing in différent sporting disciplines.

There are three main differences as compared with the Olympic Games:

1.- In the Mediterranean Games 21 countries take part, all linked by common bonds such as their history, their geographical location and the Mediterranean Sea.

2.- The Mediterranean Games are based on the Mediterranean Sea, which is why the torch and fire are replaced by water.

3.-The symbol representing the Mediterranean Games is formed by three interlinking hoops, to stand for the three continents taking part in these, and blue like the waters of the Mediterranean.
